Indiana freshman guard Jakai Newton undergoes procedure, no timetable for return
Indiana freshman guard Jakai Newton had a procedure on Wednesday according to a release from the program.
Here’s the brief statement on Newton, via IU:
“Indiana freshman guard Jakai Newton underwent a procedure to treat a pre-existing injury today. There is no timetable for his return at this point.”
The 6-foot-3 Newton was ranked the No. 117 player in the country in the final 247Composite rankings for the 2023 class.
Indiana’s first commit in its 2023 recruiting class, Newton gave his pledge to Mike Woodson and the coaching staff in October 2021.
As a junior at Newton, the 6-foot-3 guard averaged 14.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists.
But in May of 2022, Newton suffered a setback that would impact the rest of his high school career. A torn meniscus and cartilage issue required surgery and forced Newton to the sidelines. His time on the floor as a senior at Newton High School in Covington, Georgia was limited due to the injury.
Now it appears Newton’s status for the 2023-24 season could be in question.
