Recapping Indiana’s successful spring on the recruiting trail
It’s been 63 days since Indiana’s 2023-24 season ended with a 93-66 loss to Nebraska in the Big Ten tournament in Minneapolis.
Since then, the Hoosiers have completely revamped their roster, adding a five-star high school recruit and five transfer portal signings.
Here’s a recap and timeline of a successful nine weeks for Mike Woodson and the IU program:
March 28 – Five-star wing Bryson Tucker commits
After taking an official visit to Bloomington on March 26, five-star Bishop O’Connell (Md.) wing Bryson Tucker announced his commitment to Indiana.
“Bryson has a chance to be impactful for our ballclub right away,” Mike Woodson said of Tucker. “He has a polished offensive game with the size and strength to get to his spots on the floor. His midrange game is very impressive, and he has the athleticism to get to and score efficiently at the rim. He is a talented young man that we cannot wait to work with when he gets to campus.”
April 13 – Washington State transfer Myles Rice commits
The Hoosiers added their first commitment from the transfer portal from Rice, a first team All-PAC 12 selection, shortly after an official visit to Bloomington.
“Myles is a savvy, downhill guard that really succeeds in pick-and-roll situations,” Woodson said on April 23. “He is a three-level scorer that makes the right play consistently, whether that is getting to the rim or finding the open man. He is going to be a huge help for our ballclub, and we are very excited to welcome him and his family to Bloomington.”
April 16 – Arizona transfer Oumar Ballo commits
Indiana added a major frontcourt piece in Ballo, another first team All-PAC 12 selection, while on his official visit to Bloomington.
“Oumar is a dominating post presence on both ends of the floor with a winning background,” Woodson said on April 29 of Ballo. “His experience playing at the highest level will elevate our program. He is a big fella with soft touch around the rim, good hands, and solid footwork. He is very physical and is a perfect fit in our system and our league. We are really happy to welcome Oumar and his family to Bloomington.”
April 20 – Stanford transfer Kanaan Carlyle commits
Indiana’s incredible recruiting momentum continued with its third portal commitment in eight days. Carlyle also committed while on his visit to Bloomington.
“Kanaan is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands with the length and skillset to create scoring chances for himself and others,” Woodson said of Carlyle just a few days after his commitment. “His ability off the bounce pairs nicely with his shooting stroke. His length, quickness, and mentality give him the capability to be a high-impact defender for our ballclub. We are really excited to welcome him and his family to IU.”
April 26 – Illinois transfer Luke Goode commits
The Hoosiers added a big-time perimeter shooter in Goode less than a week after Carlyle’s commitment. Goode was IU’s fourth transfer portal commitment.
“Luke is a knockdown 3-point shooter that provides length and rebounding ability from the wing position,” Woodson said of Goode on April 30. “He comes from a very athletic background with deep family ties to this University. He has competed at the highest level of the Big Ten and is a player we will count on to help us stretch the floor. We are excited to bring his family back to Hoosier Nation.”
May 15 – Bellarmine transfer Langdon Hatton commits
After a quiet couple of weeks, the Hoosiers again landed a transfer portal commitment in Hatton, a native of Georgetown, Indiana. Hatton played at William & Mary and Bellarmine before transferring to play for the Hoosiers this spring.
“Langdon is an experienced, versatile big man that will help us with our frontcourt depth,” Woodson said on May 16. “He is a big body that can work in the post, get after the glass, and step out to knock down a shot. He is an Indiana kid that plays the right way, and we are excited to bring him home to the Hoosier state.”
