HD Video: Abell, Zeller discuss Indiana’s 105-103 win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The first of the two annual All-Star games between Indiana and Kentucky came down to the final 15.7 seconds.
And in the game’s final play, it was Indianapolis Pike’s Marquis Teague, who is headed to Kentucky, isolated against Louisville Eastern’s Remy Abell, who will play at Indiana.
Give round one to Indiana.
Teague milked the clock all the way down under three seconds and as Abell backed off slightly in anticipation of the drive, the Kentucky-bound point guard elevated and knocked down a game-winner from just inside the 3-point line.
The shot lifted Indiana to a 105-103 victory in front of a sellout crowd at Bellarmine University in Louisville.
“Teague hit a big shot,” Abell said. “Big players make big shots. I gave him the jump shot most of the time the whole game, because he just wanted to drive, but he took another jump shot. I contested it the best I could.”
Indiana has won 22 of the last 25 games in the series.
With Mr. Basketball Cody Zeller saddled with foul trouble for most of the game, Indiana turned to Andrew Smeathers, Teague, Branden Dawson and Nic Moore for much of the night.
Smeathers, a Butler signee, finished with a game-high 21 points in 18 minutes.
His 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining gave Indiana a 103-100 lead, but Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball Anthony Hickey answered a 3-pointer of his own with 17 seconds left.
Indiana elected not to call a timeout and Teague delivered the game-winner in the final seconds.
“I just wanted to come down and make a play, whatever he gave me,” Teague said. “He gave me the pull-up, so I just shot it and knocked it down.”
Final numbers for Indiana signees:
— Zeller: 9 points (4-of-7 FG, 1-of-2 FT), 9 rebounds, one block, one turnover, four fouls in 20 minutes
— Abell: 12 points (2-of-10 FG, 7-of-8 FT), one rebounds, two steals, one assist, four turnovers in 28 minutes
— Austin Etherington:1 point (0-for-2 FG, 1-of-2 FT), four rebounds, one assist, one turnover, three fouls in nine minutes
