Indiana falls eight spots to No. 31 in updated Bart Torvik rankings for 2024-25 season

Over the weekend, college basketball analytics guru Bart Torvik released updated projections for the 2024-25 season.

While Torvik’s rankings are constantly changing as roster moves are made in the offseason, the update over the weekend was more significant.

All of the movement in the rankings is listed here, but according to Bart, the projections have been updated to use BPM as the method for player projections.

Basketball Reference defines BPM as a “basketball box score-based metric that estimates a basketball player’s contribution to the team when that player is on the court. It is based only on the information in the traditional basketball box score–no play-by-play data or non-traditional box score data (like dunks or deflections) are included. BPM uses a player’s box score information, position, and the team’s overall performance to estimate the player’s contribution in points above league average per 100 possessions played.”

This change resulted in significant shifts in team projections for the 2024-25 season.

Big Ten rosters for the 2024-25 season are available here, but here’s a look at all of the changes for Big Ten teams in the updated Torvik rankings for next season:

Illinois – 17 (moved up 27 spots)

Rutgers – 19 (moved up 11 spots)

Maryland – 42 (moved up 10 spots)

Penn State – 73 (moved up 9 spots)

Iowa – 46 (moved up 9 spots)

Ohio State – 33 (moved up 6 spots)

Michigan State – 18 (moved up 2 spots)

Wisconsin – 41 (moved up 2 spots)

Oregon – 43 (moved up 2 spots)

Michigan – 34 (moved up 1 spot)

Nebraska – 47 (fell 1 spot)

Minnesota – 70 (fell 2 spots)

Purdue – 16 (fell 4 spots)

Indiana – 31 (fell 8 spots)

Northwestern – 48 (fell 10 spots)

UCLA – 24 (fell 10 spots)

Washington – 71 (fell 14 spots)

USC – 51 (fell 26 spots)

According to Torvik’s projections, Indiana is expected to have the No. 18 offense and the No. 52 defense next season.
