At the Buzzer: Indiana 83, Maryland 78
Quick thoughts on an 83-78 win at Maryland:
How it happened
After a strong performance Tuesday against Wisconsin in Bloomington, Indiana reverted to some of the poor play exhibited during its four-game losing streak in the first half against Maryland. While the Hoosiers did some good things in the first 20 minutes, including a 5-for-11 3-point shooting performance, it was mostly underwhelming. The Terrapins, who scored just 53 points in the first meeting in Bloomington, scored 43 on 1.22 points per possession in the first half at the Xfinity Center. The trio of Jahmir Young (12 points), Julian Reese (11 points) and Donta Scott (11 points) combined for 34 points. Maryland outscored IU 20-8 in the paint and 10-2 in points off of turnovers to claim a 43-33 halftime advantage. It was a half to forget for Kel’el Ware, who went scoreless in 19 minutes.
After Maryland stretched the lead to 51-35 early in the second half, the Hoosiers went on an 11-2 run to force a Maryland timeout at the 14:54 mark. Mackenzie Mgbako caught fire just before the under-12 media timeout, scoring nine straight points to pull the Hoosiers within three at 60-57 with 11:08 to play. The Hoosiers got within one at 61-60 on a Kel’el Ware bucket with 10:13 left. The Hoosiers then tied the game at 64 on a pair of Trey Galloway free throws and took the lead at 66-64 on a Galloway bucket, forcing Maryland to take a timeout with 8:16 left. Indiana extended the lead to six at 70-64 on a Xavier Johnson layup with 5:30 remaining. The IU run stretched to 12-0 with a Ware dunk at the 4:38 mark. At the final media timeout, IU led 75-64. Maryland got within five at 77-72 after a Jahmir Young 3-pointer, but the Terps would get no closer as IU picked up its 16th win and eighth conference victory.
Standout performers
Mgbako led the Hoosiers with 24 points on 8-for-15 shooting and Malik Reneau added 14 points in 25 minutes. Xavier Johnson (13 points) and Trey Galloway (12 points) also finished in double figures. Johnson had six assists and Galloway had four. Kel’el Ware had nine points and 15 rebounds.
Statistics that stand out
The Hoosiers shot 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) on 3s, 14-for-17 (82.4 percent) from the free throw line and 56.4 overall from the field. IU scored 50 points in the second half.
