Notebook: April evaluation period tips off Friday

The lone evaluation period in April will tip off Friday night as college coaches begin to dive deeper into the 2020 classes and beyond.

In previous years, there have been two three-day evaluation periods in April, but that’s not the case in 2019. Due to significant changes to the NCAA recruiting calendar, this weekend is the only opportunity this month for coaches to evaluate prospects at certified events.

The three major shoe circuit events are spread out this weekend. Adidas will be in Dallas, Nike will be in Atlanta and Under Armour will be in Kansas City.

Following the weekend, there will be a four-day recruiting period in which coaches will be able to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations. The complete recruiting calendar is available at this link, but we’ve also summed up the 2019 evaluation period opportunities for college coaches below:

April 26-28: Non scholastic events certified by the NCAA
June 13-14: NBPA Top 100 Camp (ends at 2 p.m. on June 14)
June 21-23 and June 28-30: Scholastic events approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations or a two-year college athletics governing body
July 11-14: Non scholastic events certified by the NCAA
July 23-28: NCAA youth development camps

Indiana to go in-home with Bloomington star

Bloomington South guard Anthony Leal, arguably the top player in the state in the 2020 class, will host Indiana for an in-home visit on Monday.

Jon Blau of The Bloomington Herald-Times reported news of the scheduled visit on Wednesday evening.

Indiana has not yet extended a scholarship offer to Leal, who is also being recruited by Stanford, Butler, Virginia and Xavier.

A core junior Indiana All-Star, Leal averaged 19.9 points per game this past season at South. He led the Panthers to the Class 4A regional game where they fell to IU signee Trayce Jackson-Davis and Center Grove.

Quinones official visit in progress

Class of 2019 wing Lester Quinones, one of the best available seniors in the country, is currently on an official visit to Indiana.

Quinones will take a visit to Michigan early next week before making a decision.

The New York native, who played at IMG Academy in Florida, is the No. 60 player nationally in the 2019 class according to the 247Composite.

Known for his shooting prowess, the 6-foot-5 guard is also considering LSU, Memphis and Maryland.

Purdue lands 2020 guard

One of the top 2020 players in the state, Mishawaka Marian guard Jaden Ivey, committed to Purdue on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-2 guard also had offers from Notre Dame and Butler. Ivey is a three-star prospect and the No. 215 player nationally according to the 247Composite.

Ivey is the son of Notre Dame women’s basketball assistant coach Niele Ivey.

Windham to Creighton

One of the top remaining in-state players in the class of 2019, Jalen Windham, came off the board on Wednesday night.

The former Georgia State signee reopened his recruitment after Ron Hunter took the Tulane job and committed to Creighton during his official visit.

Indiana had expressed some interest in Windham, but did not extend a scholarship offer.

Windham averaged 17.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game for the Giants, who fell to Carmel in the Class 4A championship game last month.

Indiana team camp dates set

Indiana will have two team camps this season, according to the schedule published by Hoosier Sports Camps.

The first team camp will run from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 and the second camp will run from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 15.

Archie Miller’s team camps have been a valuable tool the last two years for recruiting.

At Miller’s first team camp in 2017, the Hoosiers hosted Jerome Hunter and Pickerington North. Hunter committed to the Hoosiers less than a month late

And last summer, the Hoosiers had Trayce Jackson-Davis and Center Grove at camp. Jackson-Davis signed with Indiana last fall during the early signing period.
