Film Session: How Kennesaw State exploited Indiana’s help defense for 3-pointers

Kennesaw State made 17-of-35 (48.5 percent) from distance against the Hoosiers on Friday night. Those 17 made 3-pointers were the second-most Indiana has allowed in the Mike Woodson era and also the second-most allowed by Indiana in the KenPom era, which dates back to the 2001-2002 season.

Penn State’s 18 made 3s in Happy Valley last season on Jan. 11 are the current record holders against Woodson’s Hoosiers.

As we’ve seen throughout Woodson’s tenure, his defensive philosophy of bringing a help defender to the nail leaves Indiana susceptible to wing 3-pointers, which the Owls took advantage of time and again. And even when the Owls didn’t beat the Hoosiers off the drive, Indiana was essentially zoning the ball with the help defender, leaving space for shooters on the opposite side of the court.
