Hoosiers in the NBA: Jackson-Davis surging as regular season nears completion
Under 10 games remain in the NBA regular season and it’s time for our fourth “Hoosiers in the NBA” update.
Here’s an updated look at how each of the seven Hoosiers in the NBA are performing through more than 70 games of the 2023-24 campaign:
Eric Gordon – Phoenix
2023-24 stats (63 games): 11.4 points, 2.1 assists, 1.9 rebounds, .9 steals in 28.4 minutes per game
Over the last 10 games, Gordon is shooting a stellar 41.3 percent on 3s in 22.4 minutes per game. He’s shooting 38.4 percent on 3s for the season and 80 percent from the free throw line.
A 15-year NBA veteran, the 6-foot-3 Gordon is still valuable as a rotation piece who can space the floor and provide veteran leadership on and off the floor.
Playoff outlook: The Suns are currently tied with New Orleans for sixth in the Western Conference. Securing at least the sixth seed would keep Phoenix out of the play-in games for the seventh or eighth seed.
O.G. Anunoby – New York
2023-24 stats (44 games): 14.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 steals in 34 minutes per game
Injuries have derailed Anunoby’s season. He returned on March 12 after an absence of more than a month but played just three games before going back on the shelf as his elbow injury flared up.
According to Tom Thibodeau, there’s currently no timetable for Anunoby to return to the lineup.
“You deal with it day-to-day,” the Knicks coach recently told reporters. “When he’s strong enough, he gets out there.”
Playoff outlook: The Knicks are currently the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference, just a half-game behind Orlando for fourth and a game behind Cleveland for third.
Victor Oladipo – Free Agent
2023-24 stats (0 games): Has not played due to injury
Oladipo is out of the NBA after being waived in early February by Memphis.
Due to his injury history, Oladipo will likely be looking at a non-guaranteed deal next season as he tries to work his way back into the league.
Thomas Bryant – Miami
2023-24 stats (37 games): 5.4 points, 3.5 rebounds in 11.3 minutes per game
Bryant recently recorded his first double-double of the season in a 142-82 win against Portland on March 29.
The 6-foot-10 big man finished with 26 points, 12 rebounds, two blocked shots, two steals and one assist in 22 minutes off the bench in the victory.
Over his last 10 games, Bryant has averaged 9.1 points and 5.2 rebounds in 14.3 minutes per game.
Playoff outlook: The Heat, winners of three straight, are currently tied with Indiana for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.
Cody Zeller – New Orleans
2023-24 stats (40 games): 1.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, .9 assists in 7.6 minutes per game
Zeller is not a regular part of the New Orleans rotation, as he only appeared in three games in March, scoring a total of eight points in 13 minutes.
Playoff outlook: The Pelicans are currently tied with Phoenix for the sixth seed in the Western Conference and just half a game behind Dallas for fifth.
Jalen Hood-Schifino – Los Angeles Lakers
2023-24 stats (21 games): 1.6 points, .6 rebounds in 5.2 minutes per game
Hood-Schifino recently underwent season-ending back surgery and is expected to be out until this summer.
According to reports, the procedure – a lumbar microdiscectomy – involved a bulging disk in his back being shaved.
The 20-year-old wasn’t a regular part of the Lakers rotation in the 21 games he played as a rookie.
Playoff outlook: The Lakers will likely be in the play-in for the Western Conference playoffs as they’re currently in ninth in the conference standings.
Trayce Jackson-Davis – Golden State
2023-24 stats (61 games): 7.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists, one block in 15.8 minutes per game
Jackson-Davis is a significant part of Golden State’s team as a rookie and is considered one of the steals of the 2023 NBA draft.
Over the last 10 games, the IU product is averaging 10.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, two assists, 1.8 blocked shots and a steal in 26.7 minutes per game.
He’s shooting 70.4 percent from the field for the season and has started nine games.
Playoff outlook: The Warriors have won five straight and are 10th in the Western Conference, which is the final spot for the play-in for the playoffs.
