DES MOINES, Iowa – Quick thoughts on a 99-74 win over Chattanooga in the first round of the NCAA tournament:
How it happened: This was a contest that was close early, but Indiana’s high powered offense was too much for Chattanooga to handle. The Hoosiers scored an impressive 1.27 points per possession in the first half and led by as many as 28 late in the second half. This was a balanced offensive performance for Indiana as five guys scored in double figures led by Yogi Ferrell with 20 points. The Hoosiers finished with the evening scoring 1.38 points per possession and with a turnover percentage of just 16.7. The win moves the Hoosiers into the round of 32 on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena for a potential matchup with Kentucky, provided the Wildcats get past Stony Brook later tonight. This was Indiana’s first NCAA tournament win since the 2012-2013 season when the Hoosiers advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling to Syracuse.
Standout performer: Ferrell was dominant and controlled the game throughout in finishing with 20 points and 10 assists in 36 minutes. It was the type of performance you’d expect from your senior point guard in a win or go home tournament.
Statistic that stands out: The Hoosiers shot a very solid 10-of-16 on 3-pointers (62.5 percent), a shooting touch they’ll need to continue on Saturday if they hope to advance to the regional next weekend in Philadelphia.
