Actually FIU you are one person on here that I almost always agree with. I think you and I are quite a lot alike in our viewpoint ands support of Crean and the team. I am so anxious to see them play this season. I do think we’re all going to be pleasantly surprised by their performance this year. I really hop Mosquera-Perea, April and Holt turn out to be better than we all anticipate. I think the rest of the team is without question (to quote a Ceanism), going to be so much better than last year. Go Hoosiers!!

Wondering if Holt doesn’t have a little Darryl Thomas in him.

What do you do with Troy Williams in that scenario?

As a freshman Max has to have a thick skin and like “tough love”. Most teachers realize that you start out tough and set the expectations, then you can become more reasonable. However, if you are forgiving at the first, it is very hard to then be tough later on. Hustle, defensive effort, rebounding commitment are non-negotiable”s to playing on a great team!

I think that Max will be more athletic than Ted. But Ted was a player you could really count on!

He will be a key player in the rotation for IU this season. I have no fear that Max will be confident and take his shot when it is there and, more importantly, hit 40-50% of them! He is 6’9 and, when he gets stronger and more experienced, he will be a good rebounder. I guess the question is will our 6’9 forwards ever be able to rebound like our 6’7 forwards? Probably not. But both Max and Tim can shoot the 3! I hope that Coach Crean does not “chicken out” and not use the shooting skills of Max and Tim for meaningful minutes. If you put Tim in one corner, Max in the other, let Yogi play pick and roll with Hanner (with Hanner crashing towards the rim not stepping out), and put James, Robert or Nick at the 3-point line up top, what can a defense do?

Thanks, HoosierKen. I agree with you, and I give CTC the benefit of the doubt most of the time, and I have said many times that I like him as our coach. I just don’t see what putting something out in public adds to private disciplining or reproach. I can’t help but think that this type of public reproach might sour some attitudes and create a public scar that is impossible to remove. In any case, as long as the team and players are okay with it, that’s what matters in the end. From my experience as a teacher, calling out a student in front of classmates or others might make a point, but it never improves performance.

To be honest, I have somewhat mixed emotions about it. He hasn’t really done it a whole lot, but I gues I am more against it than for it. However, I have heard other coaches do similar things, especially when they were pretty upset about something.. and I believe particularly last year CTC had a great deal to be upset about. Even Tom Izzo on a couple of occasions has called a player out at some point… I believe it was Valentine that he pretty much at one time earlier last year was not satisfied with the amount of effort.. and called one or two players out. I guess one has to factor in, what other things has he done that we don’t know about, that haven’t worked.. and/or as in the case of Max, he may have just been trying to send a message that loafing on the court will not happen this year. It could also be read into some of the statements that he has made about Hanner, that in fact Hanner wasn’t putting out, while he was out there like CTC expected him to.. whether because he was not in good enough ‘game shape’ to put out for long periods of time, or because he wasn’t putting out at practice hard enough to get in good enough shape to be able to do so.. Anyway, I guess all of this is to say, I generally am noyt in favor of him calling out a player in public, but when you saw some of the games and the lack of really ‘getting after it’ during a game, it almost appeared they did not want to compete all that bad.. perhaps Crean felt something drastic needed to be done.. and this year doesn’t want to start the year on the same note. That’s JMHO.. Maybe I’m all wrong about it…lol… I know CTC has his shortcomings, I wish he didn’t have or would change.. but all in all I really do like him and am glad at least for now, that he is out coach. I like what he stands for and like the direction he is trying to take the program.. Just hope and pray he is successful at getting it done.

Personally I don’t mind the coach calling him out for it in public. I think it makes a statement to the entire team. It’s a pre season exhibition and the kid will have plenty of time to recover from it before the season starts. Plus I doubt Max is so fragile that being called out will hurt him that much.

This is really a reply to this whole point about making public comments about Max, not just a reply to you Michael. LOL. First of all, Milla was just making a small “not losing sleep over it” comment, but it must have hit a nerve. So, I’ll jump in with the point that I think CTC was making. He did say that the jogging instead of running was “non-negotiable for us this year”, and that was his point (IMO). I believe he was fortifying that idea to his players, AND to the fan base. He was also letting all of us know that we should be a running team this year, and we’re deep enough to do that (IMO). So yeah, he calls his players out in public, he also gives them heaps of praise. It’s called a critique, not criticism. He doesn’t just hose them down, he holds them up also.

So, the same people “complain about certain lineups or sub patterns but apparently hate hearing some of the reasoning for it?”

No chance you’ve actually seen the opinions of different people at different times?

HoosierKen as I explained I’m not against the “reasoning behind taking him out”; what do I know about basketball, compared to CTC, anyway? It’s calling the player out in the “public” comments. And it’s not even about this as an isolated case. Just curious, how did you feel about, for example, CTC’s “public” criticism of Hanner (the “fun and games” episode)? A number of people I consider “ITH friends” disagreed with me, and that’s fine, but I’m totally against taking player criticism to the public airwaves. I just think it is poor leadership. And I did say above that that’s one of my “few criticisms” of CTC, which means that on balance I think he is a good coach.

Btw, I’m not one of those who think Coach needs to justify everything he does to the fan base.

Hmmmm, aren’t these the some of the same guys who criticize Crean for not telling them stuff at times? Now he explains the reasoning behind taking him out, and they find fault with that as well.. whew…

I talked to a customer at work yesterday, who went to the fantasy camp and was pretty close to Hoetzel.. He said there’s no doubt Max is easily 6′ 9″ and the word there was, they really expect him to end up at least 6′ 10″ before he stops growing. He also said Jeremiah April is every bit of 7 foot.. No ‘question about it’.. No it wasn’t Crean saying it…lol…

Everyone gets all worked up in here for the smallest thing. I noted it was just my opinion. The guy calls the kids out at times. I don’t think it’s a great leadership trait. Others may disagree. And the world keeps spinning. And how this thing came to be an subbing/ X and Os topic I have no idea 🙂
