I really look forward to seeing Stanford’s game.

I believe that this is CTC’s best recruiting class . Every one of them bring something different and have a lot of upside. I don’t want to even speculate what the lineups will be . I think it will take many games before Crean figures out what will work the best . And then I think there will be change due to opponents as we’ll . Stan seems like a blue collar type player that will do it all . I’m thinking his defense is what might get him the minutes .

I think he is going to be pretty dependable this year. I think expectations got lowered a bit last year because he went out to play for the team in Vegas with, what 7 division 1 players. One of which was a ball holding on to point guard, who delegated Robinson to be a complimentary player. In my opinion that helps him transition to the college level, and into a supporting role much better than many higher ranked recruits who shouldered the load for their high school teams and will now have to operate as someone who is not “the guy”.

If its true it should help him see playing time. Crean is always looking for vocal leaders on the court.

He is big and strong..can board..get to the hole and defend. Gonna be a major factor if IU has success this year IMO.

I don’t think we are as thin at guard as this article would have you think. Jonny Marlin could be a surprise this season as well.

Crean used AE sometimes last year when he went zone on defense. He slid AE into the 5 spot on offense and created some problems with matchups and got some open looks for him. I’ll be curious if he tries to use him for short bursts this year as a stretch-5 as well. The biggest question would be defensively how would they cope with that, but if they go zone periodically, I think it masks it pretty well. That was my observation at least.

I think it’s really more a matter of who you can guard. AE and CH may not be quick enough to guard most other 2’s as well as Crean would like. Even Will is marginal because of propensity for foul trouble, but no doubt this has been a point of emphasis for him and you can be sure he’s worked on it. I think how all of them are used depends more on the defensive matchups.

If you even read the comments people write no one is claiming to find the next Oladipo, because you won’t find a replica of that guy. What people are hoping is that our incoming recruits can match their work ethic to their physical talents, like Victor did and become productive players for the program.

There are two scenarios here:

1. you are a fan for a different team – if so its pretty sad you have to troll another teams blog
2. you are a strange IU fan who thinks he knows everything about basketball and therefore should do all the coaching, recruiting, commenting, press conferences, articles, ect. and that based on your opinions you could easily lead the program to championships year in and year out.

either way we are starting to figure out that you are just a weird guy, and we all feel bad for you.

I don’t think they know where Austin Etherington is, it really depends on health. I was pretty impressed with him (albeit usually in blowout, garbage time) last season before his injury and I think he is capable of producing if given a chance. That being said, I’d be surprised if either Etherington or Hartman are quick enough to play shooting guard. I would agree with you on Gordon and I could see him getting him starts at the 2-guard because of his experience and defensive ability. So, scholarship “guards” would be Yogi, Robinson, Gordon and Sheehey (according to Coach Crean). I don’t think Etherington or Hartman fit in to their plans at guard so I guess that leaves them at small forward or small ball, stretch 4’s.

That was a good article on the whole team. I really think EG is being over looked at shooting guard. And where will AE be playing, or CH? both 6-6 shooters who can rebound a little and pass. Almost seems they have 6

There has been some speculation about how Will Sheehey will be used and whether or not he would deputize at shooting guard for some of his minutes. I found this recent quote from Tom Crean (credit to Dustin Dopirak for the Herald Times for this interview) to be quite telling:

“Will came here with a great mind for offensive rebounding. He’s going to
play more of a swing guard. There’s going to be more two spot for him
this year. You really look at our team. We have four guards, and you
have to count him as one of those guards. Last year we had six when
you’re looking at scholarship guys. But at the same time, he’s gotta be
phenomenal on the boards. You know, when a guy that is that athletic, he
can’t get caught in the middle ground, no man’s land. He’s gotta be at
the board using his athleticism, but at the same time when it’s not
there, sprinting back to be a defensive stopper. So we’re going to
expect a lot of him. We’re going to try to take his athleticism
abilities to another level, but his efficiency as a player is going to
be paramount.”

Tom Crean is clearly expecting Will Sheehey to handle the 2-guard spot for at least some of the game. I imagine that lineup would be something like Yogi, Will, Williams, Hollowell and Vonleh. I question whether or not Sheehey can stay out of foul trouble if he is guarding a quick 2-guard on the perimeter for a long period of time but that type of lineup would certainly be lengthy and could create some real matchup issues for the opponent.
