Can we combine the two players into one? That would solve everything.

Think there is more to it than that. Not sure how many credits but we’re talking a full year and a decent amount of cash out of pocket.

Put it this way, if Matt were as vital as even a Jordan Hulls, would his 4th year of eligability have ever been put at risk? If the answer is no then the correlary is that CTC made a strategic decision at Matt’s expense. I don’t like that. Do unto others and all…

Since he already has his degree(s), can he come back and take just 1 class? I think I remember Matt Leinert taking just 1 class (Ballroom Dancing) when he came back for his senior year. Or, do you have to be a ‘full time’ student? The reason I ask is that 1 1-credit class might not be too bad financially.

The Bruins are loaded with 6’10 , 6’11 guys with weight.

Still seems like a tough call at this point. He already has two degrees. At this point what is there to study? Is he really a student at that stage? And it’s out of pocket?

I really think the team can use him. And from what I read I don’t think Coach is waiting on Roth.

It will be a relief to finally get the speculation of the scholarship situation resolved.

Honestly, I just think of it as 2 separate tournaments. I mean, that’s really all it is.

The only thing I would say to that is that Roth got 4 years. The understanding when you offer scholarships is more often than not, you are making a four year commitment to a player and he is making the same to you.

It would be totally different if Roth were a fringe NBA player who might make a push towards being drafted with this last year but that’s not the case. In that scenario, I would say IU owed Roth all his eligibility because he had a chance to make a better living as a pro but as it stands, IU has given Roth the ability to earn two degrees which will give him his best opportunities in the professional world.

It would be a lot different and harder to accept if Roth had been pushed out before his first four years were done but thats not the case. He was a great part of our school and basketball program for four years and received two degrees for free and I believe most of us are ok with that. Sadly life doesn’t work out perfectly, especially when you’re forced to rebuild from nothing like Crean was. It does suck but I also don’t think it takes any spinning. Crean is not gonna come off bad to any recruits because the guys we are recruiting now don’t expect to be four year guys.

Don’t blame Crean, just blame the freak nature of injuries that cost Roth one of his four years.

Juryr stil out of Mo Creek..and if that opens up a spot I guess it could go to the 6th new recruit or Mr. Roth for another year?

From what we all know about CTC, does is make sense perhaps that Coach is waiting to hear from Matt on what MATT ROTH wants to do? I’d bet my house that Roth has a spot on the team with “preferred walk-on” status. Again, it seems to me that Matt can come back and play on a serious National Title contending team with his significant specialty as a sniper from anywhere near mid-court. My advice to Matt is to find a way to foot the bill this last season and thank God for the opportunity to chase your dreams doing what you love. The career will be there for the rest of your life Matt. BTW, if your new bride (congrats dude!) is an Indiana resident, you may qualify for in-state tuition. Look into that;)

IUjb, i’m not sure what you mean by “it’s simply not cool that he couldn’t be on the team…” He WAS on the team…a magical team that the nation (not just Hoosier Nation) fell in love with. He was a potent offensive weapon whose defensive skills really picked up last year and his contributions will not be forgotten anytime soon. WE LOVE MATT ROTH!!!
And I’m sure CTC would welcome him on the team again as a walk-on. True, he would have to pay out-of-state tuition for any more graduate level courses, but…he did get ALL of his undergraduate degree and then his Master’s degree paid for. I guess it’s really just up to Matt as to whether he wants to go for a National Title on his own dime..it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. What would his minimum tuition and books run? I’m not buying the argument (nobody brought it up yet) of opportunity cost of finding a job…a job will be there after this coming season..perhaps an even better job.
I think we all need to chill on the “this kind of situation cannnot happen again” talk, and recognize what these kids got in exchange for an agreement to play. It’s not like Roth is being kicked off the team or fired from a position in IU Athletics. He rec’d 4 years of college education from one of the nation’s best universities FOR FREE.
Relax and let Coach be the coach.
Respectfully submitted,
Danner Perea, IUbb fan for life

has a bright future ahead. He’ll be married soon and with two degrees
from IU he should enjoy a nice career. Matt will always be remembered as
part of the team that put IU back on the map. IU Nation will never
forget.

The logical extension of this is that it is morally ok for players to be recruited over at any time; eg ‘player x got 2 years of free education, so the university doesn’t owe them anything.’
I think it makes more sense to think of student-athletes, especially big-time student athletes, as giving a ton to the university in return for their education and the chance to compete in the sport they love. Matt helped put a great face on the university through his hard work, and was rewarded for it. The expectation should be that as long as you are eligible and put in that hard work you will be rewarded with the chance to keep going to school and playing the sport you love.
I think the better argument is the ‘stuff happens’ one, but it doesn’t seem that was the case given that we are 2 over. Stuff only ‘happened’ to whoever else is out or pays their way on Aug 20th, but Matt was never part of the plan for the team. And he should have been. Bottom line, CTC obviously shouldn’t be demonized for this, but it can’t become a policy.
