What you need to know about the college basketball transfer portal in 2024
The transfer portal is officially open for business.
And it’s expected to be a busy portal season for Indiana basketball.
In recent seasons, Indiana has used the portal to add players like Xavier Johnson, Miller Kopp and Kel’el Ware. But this spring, the Hoosiers are expected to be more active than ever in recruiting the portal.
With no players signed in the 2024 recruiting class, Indiana will be looking to add several pieces from the portal to fill out a roster for next season.
The Hoosiers finished the 2023-24 season 19-14, a disappointing performance in Mike Woodson’s third campaign in Bloomington.
The transfer portal will also look different this spring than in previous years.
In October, the Division I council approved changes to the notification-of-transfer windows in all sports. The change included reducing the window from 60 to 45 consecutive days in men’s and women’s basketball.
“In both men’s and women’s basketball, the council determined that a 45-day window that concludes on or before May 1 best enables coaches to understand their current rosters, provides stability for student-athletes remaining at the school as they prepare for summer basketball, and encourages student-athletes who intend to transfer to do so before final exams at their current schools and summer school application deadlines at most campuses,” said Lynda Tealer, chair of the council and deputy athletics director at Florida, in a release. “Moving forward, we will continue to evaluate the impact of transfer windows on student-athletes, coaches and athletics programs.”
Last spring, the window to enter the transfer portal began on Monday, March 13 and concluded on Thursday, May 11. This year, the portal opens Monday, March 18 and closes Wednesday, May 1.
Postgraduate student-athletes for fall and winter sports could enter the portal before March 18 but must enter by May 1.
The window deadline is only for student-athletes to enter the portal and doesn’t require them to choose a new school by May 1.
For college coaches, it will be pivotal to continue recruiting their current players for next season until the deadline to enter the portal passes.
Another change this year is that there is no sit-out period for a student-athlete who has previously transferred. A waiver had been required for a student-athlete who had previously transferred and wasn’t a grad transfer, but that is no longer the case.
While the NCAA does not provide public access to the transfer portal, numerous resources are available to track the names of student-athletes entering the portal.
Verbal Commits is the most frequently updated resource, which features a constantly updated feed of portal entries. Verbal Commits also tracks portal entries on its Twitter account.
247Sports also has a transfer portal tracker that is updated in real-time.
As of early Monday morning, Indiana has not had a player from its current roster enter the portal.
Last offseason, three Hoosiers – Tamar Bates, Logan Duncomb and Jordan Geronimo – left via the portal. Indiana brought in three players – Ware, Anthony Walker and Payton Sparks – via the portal last spring.
There are currently over 200 players in the portal, according to Verbal Commits.
