I was talking about CH not being able to hit the broad side of a barn…..not Yogi. I never brought up Yogi. I watched Yogi play at IU a lot and I saw CH play this last season….no comparison. But to humor you, you are absolutely right….Yogi could not have been as good as he was in college and is now in the NBA, if he had not lifted weights. No weights…no Yogi…right?
I mean we could spend the rest of the year just picking out players that fit your weight lifting point of view and I could bring up many fat or skinny guys who don’t lift weights and play very good college ball. So please do “put this to bed”…..I have.

My last comment was meant to have a conversation….no antagonism. Your condescending comment reeked of antagonism. There is nothing to ponder on my end, but it would be nice if you did get off my lawn.

Glad I could shed some light. Before we put this to bed for good I have a quick question, Koko. Do you think Yogi might be able to start hitting the broad side of a barn from 3 if he didn’t have such a muscular physique (40% for his career at IU, 38% for his NBA career.)

Agreed. Strength training definitely affects your shooting (I’ve had first hand experience) but it can be corrected by getting shots up and adjusting to it. Classic “lean” basketball players aren’t going to pull in the rebounds and 50/50 balls against guys who can physically dominate them.

Weight training wasn’t as popular and the three ball wasn’t a thing, just to name a couple ways in which the B1G and college ball in general has changed in the last 60 years.

Ponder that while I get off your lawn.

Good memory about New Albany. I grew up there. I live in Utah at the moment so I will be there in spirit.

FTs were the difference in our ability to enhance our tournament resume. We were a terrible shooting team as everyone knows. Strength training while, I agree is beneficial, changes the feel of your shot. You really have to be diciplined while doing strength training by practicing your shot relentlessly or you risk relearning your own muscle memory for effective shooting.

The 2-3 seasons worth of atrophy were very apparent at the end.

And I didn’t say he wore a Hoosier uniform his senior year. GW played Memphis on national TV that season.

I don’t see many fat and or skinny guys creating/finishing good looks, playing tough defense or grabbing rebounds.

He did miss some open shots, but he had far fewer good looks with Newkirk and Green running the show. I watched every game this year and most twice. The DVR doesn’t lie.

I’m sure the staff is striking a nice balance with shooting/skills and weight room workouts. Al Durham in particular is going to be much better off at 175 than 160 in a long BIG season. Basketball is a contact sport.

CH had many open looks this season….he just missed the shots. I too think it is naive to think we aren’t working on basketball skills….did I say we weren’t working on basketball skills? We make free throws we win games, we make threes we win games….whether one is fat or skinny or a six pack phenom.

Times have changed for sure…..remember Jimmy Rayl? His nickname was “Splendid Splinter” and he played three years in the B1G unscathed and scoring a bunch of points.

Okay John…thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.
I guess at least we both agree something has to give in relation to time spent practicing free throws and threes.
I’m looking forward to the next couple weeks and of course next season. As I am sure you are too….it should be a fun ride. Are you going to Romeo’s announcement? Did I once see you comment that you live in or near New Albany?

Assuming we start playing deeper in the BIG and NCAA tournaments. I’m confident that’s coming.

Exactly. Injuries happen all the time at every level to every team. This a 35 game grind in one of the toughest conferences in America.

Hartman didn’t have Yogi creating great looks for him this year.

I think it’s naive to think they aren’t working on basketball skills as we see shooting and dribbling drills in the videos posted.

Of course none of them look like Schwarenegger….I think you took that comment out of context. Actually I don’t think my claims were meant to be taken literally, nor did they not make sense. A person can overdo weight lifting and cause problems in execution for their sport. Happens all the time…but you know that….don’t you? As you are sure Cliff Marshall knows his stuff then we can only hope our shooting problems don’t continue because I doubt seriously a guy missing free throws needs to bulk up to correct whatever it is causing his free throw shooting problems. Maybe less time bulking up and more time practicing free throws? Can you explain why DD shot a good percentage on his free throws his first year and was so miserable his second year? What changed?
Funny you talk to me like I’m not aware of the physical nature of the B1G. I’ve been watching the B1G for a very long time…probably much longer than you. Believe me, I’m not the idiot you are trying to convince others I am. And if you are in a snit over my NBA pr man comment, I apologize if that offended you. But I thought you had a sense of humor which apparently you don’t have.

Audit some HPER classes.

Quite a few of these guys got physically manhandled by the B1G competition. Some strength training is overdue, and doesn’t necessarily preclude shooting drills. A strong upper body with good shooting form is going to shoot fewer airballs too.

Side note: Looks like they’re skipping leg days. Those tooth picks are giving me flashbacks to Mo Creek’s senior season.
