They left the Tech man wide open for the jam. They hedged and recovered better on the screens vs Marian. But I only have a 9th grade basketball IQ so i could be wrong.

You can see the full progression. If Rojo’s man helps he kicks to him for three or he has newkirk coming off DD screen followed by Cujo coming off DD screen.

Thank you Ryan 🙂

That’s a good observation and an interesting comment about CuJo. He is prob a weaker defender in a straight man scheme but his length and quickness are a packline asset. This defense plays to his strengths and covers his flaws

You haven’t skipped a beat, still awesome as usual. Thanks a million.

Yes. Usu. over, occ. under, but no switching. The helpers give quick help and recover to their man, is my understanding. There are some switches but following an 80/20 rule, not typically.

Also Freddie is athletic enough to do some great recovery in these clips. He looks like he is gaining some confidence in his role.

Would be an accomplishment to just repeat the point per possession after timeouts stats that Crean put up.

Thanks, Mr Corazza!

Good comments. I think you also see that the defense is weakest against 3 point shooters. That is a lot of distance for Curtis to cover to get back to the corner shooter. With the exception of Josh, I like how all of the players are able to see their man and the ball and seem to be aware of where they need to be to help. In general, I would say not bad for a first outing with this defense. Not only do we get to enjoy some film study but the coaches can not break down some things with the players and refine.

Looks like he still hasn’t graduated from IU yet. 🙂 I guess he’s too busy with the broadcasting gig.

Looks like we don’t have to worry too much about inbound passes now. Used to be a headache!

Max, personally, is the best part of the broadcasts. I wonder if he does commentary for other schools in the big ten, like Michigan? He is good at it! I appreciate his insight, and he has a great personality like you mentioned.

Max does a nice job. He’s a homer, of course, but he has a great upbeat demeanor and offers some nice insights. The broadcasts are pretty amateurish overall (literally and figuratively), but well worth it for the chance to see the Hoosiers early on.

GOOD. GRIEF! We look WAAAAYYYY better than past seasons. I get that it’s an NAIA team and all that jazz, but MAN! These guys actually look like they know what they’re doing and following a plan on defense. Looked to me like they knew their spots and when to help every time. This makes me VERY excited for the rest of the season!

Look at the 4th photo–even though the caption says that Morgan stops further penetration, it was actually Jones sagging into the extended lane area that stopped the drive. Jones has one foot on the edge of the lane, but he is in a great posture and is still able to recover to his man and prevent a 3-point attempt when it is kicked out. If well-executed, this can be an extremely effective defensive scheme (I live in UVA country, so I see plenty of it). IMO, Jones was the key to this play, and I think his defense was surprisingly good Saturday.
