Indiana still has six scholarships open for the 2024-25 season and will look to the transfer portal to fill out its roster.
There’s still just under a month left for underclassmen to enter the transfer portal with a deadline of Wednesday, May 1. Graduate transfers are eligible to enter the transfer portal at any time.
Here’s a roundup of some of the latest transfer portal happenings as they pertain to the Hoosiers:
• Myles Rice of Washington State appears to be a name to watch: The Pac-12’s freshman of the year, Myles Rice, entered the transfer portal last week.
After redshirting his first year at Washington State, Rice sat out last season while he battled Hodgkin lymphoma. This past season, his third at Washington State but first in terms of exhausting eligibility, Rice averaged 14.8 points, 3.8 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 33.2 minutes per game.
A native of Atlanta, Rice played for the Atlanta Celtics program in high school. According to Jamie Shaw of On3.com ($), Auburn and Indiana are two schools to watch for Rice.
Looking at social media accounts for Rice, he is followed by many of the players on IU’s current roster and he’s also following several current IU players.
• Brandon Huntley-Hatfield is no longer considering IU: Louisville big man Brandon Huntley-Hatfield was expected to visit Indiana after the dead period (April 4-11), but that is no longer the case.
On Monday, word broke that Huntley-Hatfield was down to the following options: a return to Louisville, NC State, Pittsburgh and UConn.
Huntley-Hatfield’s visit to Indiana was originally scheduled for April 12-14.
The 6-foot-10 big man averaged 12.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, one assist and .8 blocks in 30.8 minutes per game last season for the Cardinals.
• Indiana conducts in-home visit with Connor Hickman: According to Jeff Rabjohns of Peegs.com ($), Indiana conducted an in-home visit with Bradley transfer Connor Hickman on Monday.
A native of Bloomington who played at Bloomington South, Hickman is a 6-foot-3 guard who averaged 14.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals in 32.3 minutes per game last season for the Braves.
Hickman has one year of eligibility remaining.
He was expected to be on IU’s campus late last week, but that visit did not take place.
With Indiana’s need for shooting, Hickman would be a welcome addition to the roster. He shot 40.2 percent on 3s last season and was named third team All-Missouri Valley conference.
• The list of Big Ten players who have entered the transfer portal continues to grow: As of Tuesday morning, more than 45 Big Ten players had entered the transfer portal.
Among the most notable names from the Big Ten who have entered: Wisconsin’s AJ Storr, Ohio State’s Scotty Middleton, Minnesota’s Pharrel Payne, Iowa’s Tony Perkins and Michigan’s Dug McDaniel.
Just six players have found new schools so far.
Two of them are former Hoosiers. Payton Sparks will transfer back to Ball State and CJ Gunn will transfer to play for Chris Holtmann at DePaul.
• The dead period could make things quiet over the next week: The Final Four tips off Saturday in Phoenix and as always, a dead period for recruiting begins before a national champion is crowned and extends well into next week.
Beginning Thursday, April 4 through Thursday, April 11, no in-person recruiting, official visits or unofficial visits are allowed.
Visits can resume on Friday, April 12.
With the change of no recruiting live periods in April for high school prospects, college coaches should be able to focus the entire month on transfer portal recruiting and building rosters for next season.
The only spring evaluation period for high school prospects begins at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 17 and concludes at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 19.
There will also be a dead period for recruiting beginning Wednesday, May 22 through Sunday, June 2.
