Film Session: St. John’s
In the first half against St. John’s, Indiana defended well and didn’t struggle much against the press. But the second half told a different story. While the Red Storm simply hit some tough shots, Indiana also gave up drives off the perimeter and help defense was unable to cover up initial mistakes.
Turnover-wise, while Indiana was often able to advance the ball across half court, some early-in-the-shot-clock miscues doomed IU.
We’ll take a look at two of Indiana’s second half defensive breakdowns and a turnover, as well as Xavier Johnson’s work against drop ball screen coverage in the latest edition of Film Session:
While Rob Phinisee initially contains the ball handler here, forcing him to the left-wing, once Stef Smith gets the ball and fakes the 3-pointer, Phinisee bites and opens up, allowing for the drive. Race Thompson doesn’t cut off the drive on the help. Trayce Jackson-Davis, who has been great at protecting the rim so far this season, doesn’t even contest. So it’s a bucket for Smith.
